Our Greenest Garden Centre

The Spiky Lettuce

With all the shopping at Mayberry, you’ll be in need of a chance to sit down, relax and think about how to plan your garden and place your new plants.

The Spiky Lettuce coffee shop is the perfect environment to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, a slice of one of our homemade cakes, or one of our delicious freshly prepared meals.

Our friendly staff are always pleased to see you and are delighted to assist. If you fancy a snack, enjoy a delicious toasted sandwich, a bowl of soup or a jacket potato, or why not join us for lunch with freshly prepared sandwiches and a seasonal menu of main meals available every day. Our afternoon cream teas and selection of homemade cakes are the perfect accompaniment to sitting by the window overlooking our well stocked plant area.

So why the Spiky Lettuce? The name comes from a medieval herb, Lactuca serriola, found growing wild on site during construction. During medieval times, it was used conventionally as sedative, painkiller, diuretic and digestive aid. Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) added that wrapping the herb around a man’s genitals would help reduce sexual desire!

We hope you join us at the Spiky Lettuce soon.
